Lokmat was founded by a group of Indian freedom fighters, in 1918, from Yavatmal, in Maharashtra.

In 1952, Lokmat was acquired by, Late Shri Jawaharlal Darda, who was also a freedom fighter. Late Shri Jawaharlal Darda launched Lokmat’s first daily edition on December 15, 1971 from Nagpur.

Lokmat with its presence for the last four decades, is not only one of the leading print media businesses but also fastest growing in India with a growth in average daily readership of more than 16.48% registered between the 2007-2010.

Lokmat publishes three national dailies namely, Lokmat in Marathi, Lokmat Samachar in Hindi and Lokmat Times in English which collectively have 17 editions and 58 sub-editions. Lokmat has been the leading Marathi newspaper in terms of average daily circulation and average daily readership in Maharashtra. It is also the fifth most widely read newspaper in India with 23.67 million readers.

In order to keep pace with the changing trend towards digitalization of news content, they have launched online versions of Marathi, Hindi and English newspapers—Lokmat in 2005 and Lokmat Samachar and Lokmat Times in 2009 respectively.

Lokmat also publishes a lifestyle magazine, The Global Gujarati, a bi-monthly lifestyle magazine published in English and targeted at the Gujarati and Parsi communities in India and in certain international locations. G2 was awarded as the Best New Launch of a local title category in 2007 by the Asian Publishing Management. Lokmat won the award amid competition from among 79 entries from across Asia.

Lokmat is the leader in the Marathi Newspaper segment in terms of both circulation and readership (Source ABC January – June 2010 and IRS 2010 Q3 respectively). The joint venture company, IBN-Lokmat Private Limited (“IBNL”), operates IBN-Lokmat, 24 x 7 Marathi news and current affairs television channel which went on air on April 6, 2008. The channel’s editorial team is led by notable multimedia journalists Nikhil Wagle, editor of IBN-Lokmat and Rajdeep Sardesai, editor-in-chief of IBN Network. Lokmat has 12 printing facilities in Maharashtra and Goa with collective total installed capacity of approximately 891,000 copies per hour. Over the years, the company has extended the circulation of Lokmat to 11 key markets and several towns and villages in Maharashtra and Goa as well as certain locations bordering Maharashtra in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Lokmat manages a multi-tiered distribution network consisting of agents, sub-agents, several vendors and hawkers of over 8,461 agents, as on 31st October 2010.

Lokmat has recently incorporated in the business of film production and distribution in Hindi and Marathi. Lokmat’s first movie – Jetaa, co-produced with Ramesh Deo Productions was released in August 2010.

Lokmat is also engaged in organising events such as meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions and mega events for the group and for third party clients. For the past 10 years, Lokmat have been involved in organising various community events in Maharashtra.
